Two forms of dying methods frequently employed are: Shibori and Ikat. Shibori involves the hand tying and dyeing of the cloth to create a unique pre-decided pattern. This type of technique allows the reation of beautifully complex and intricate design. The names of this way of dyeing include: “maltinto” in Italy, “tie and dye” in America and UK, “shibori” in Japan, “plangi” in Malaysia, Indonesia, “bandhana o chunri” in India.
The second technique mentioned is “Ikat” (from malesyan-indonesian “tie, envelope”). The preparation it is quite similar to the Shibori, although it is the yarn that is prepared rather than the cloth. And the finish result in quite different.
